Wiltshire MASC Meeting – March 25th

by Geraint Swann-Price

MASC Wiltshire – March Update.

Hi everyone. This is your last minute reminder that it is our monthly social night on Monday, from around 7 PM, at the Barge Inn at Seend. Everyone is very welcome, and if you come early we can eat together; the food is pretty good. We love to see new faces too, and even encourage non-car chat too, if you can keep it clean and avoid the B word.

As I write I am on my way back from the NEC, the Practical Classics restoration show, where we’ve had a busy and tiring day. (I’m not driving!) The MASC stand was well attended, and I caught up with a few good friends there. I have been using the prototype roller clutch release bearing, the 1098 version , so I could give him feedback on that. It works well so far, nice and smooth. At the show I also got an insurance quote from Carole Nash, (£108, including breakdown, which seemed reasonable) and for just getting the quote I got 5 litres of decent Classic 20/50 oil, free. Can’t be bad.

Many more tales to tell, but they can wait. As I’m feeling flushed, maybe I’ll be at the bar and shake the moths out of my wallet on Monday, so see you there!

Andy

Website outage

by Mike Bennett

Dear Member

We have had a significant outage with the club website and email system, regrettably, it caused considerable inconvenience, not only to our members but also to the members of the committee that use the facilities to run the club, specifically to Neil our editor and Stuart our membership secretary who heavily depend on the emails for the production of MASCOT and administration of the membership.

Without going into too many technical details, the problem started when the server crashed intermittently, just like the problem with an elusive misfire, there could have been a number of causes for these problems and numerous steps were taken to isolate the issue and fix it. Then the server crashed and could not be restarted. The engineers replaced numerous components but, in the end, it was irreparable and a new server was built and installed. The email system restarted and worked well but the website could not be re-instated due to the way in which the new server had been built. The engineers attempted to resolve this but brought down the email service in the process. After a while, it became apparent that this situation was not going to get any better and a new company was found to host a server and they built a new one that had the advantage of being a later model and using newer technology. The new contract also provides for them to manage the hardware and operating system and automatically switch to new hardware should the same problem occur in the future.

With the new server available, the club’s website and email system have been restored and are now operational.

This has been an intense and at times very frustrating episode and I am sorry that it has caused so much inconvenience, but on the positive side, we now have a better platform for our internet technology.

Central MASC Monthly meeting October 3rd 8pm onwards.

Due to work commitments I may be late or unable to attend this months monthly meeting, so, please as usual, make use of the cordoned off area to the left of the bar who ever arrives first.

I’ll be attending the MASC A.G.M. at Gaydon this Saturday 6th. If you would like to join me for the drive there or have any questions you would like me to ask just let me know.

I’ll (weather permitting) also be attending the last Middleton Hall (B78 2AE) meeting of the year on Sunday October 7th,10am onwards.

I know Greg and Anita are meeting up with members from Notts/Derby group to travel to the Hall’s Garage 70th event on October 13th in Bourne, Lincolnshire, maybe one to discuss at the monthly meeting if you would also like to go or contact me via e-mail to show your interest.
