I have major concerns with the addition of ethanol to fuel especially for use with classic cars that were not designed for same and where many of the materials used in their construction are not compatible.
Considering that the filler cap needs to be of the ‘vented’ type, it is highly likely that moist/humid air will have been ingested into the fuel tanks on all Spridgets that will have resulted in the accumulation of water and consequent absorption of ethanol leading to the issues described in the attached article.
The suggestion of ‘slosh coating’ the inside of fuel tanks may not be feasible on Spridgets due to the internal fuel pick-up filter.
I am therefore investigating options for the removal of such water that even complete tank draining may not readily address and am seeking an old tank that could be cut open to confirm internal details of the fuel pick-up and baffle arrangements. Also the provision of a tank drain plug not provided on current replacements.
The possibility for a practical means of ‘sloshing’ can also be addressed.
Stainless steel tanks are available for some classic vehicles (MGB ?) however such material may make matters even worse !
I have made approaches to a number of specialist suppliers for water absorbing ‘socks’ that with some amendments could be inserted via the tank filler to aid water removal without the need for total draining.
