Frog rebuild. Also rolling road in Woking

by Gavin Rowles Rowles

Morning all.
Area member Mike Hicks has advised me of a rolling road tuner in Woking. No recommendation is implied but I think I will give them a call to see what they are about plus costs. Might be of interest somewhat later this year.

The company involved is Harding Auto’s GU21 2ND.

Mike has also shared comprehensive comments about His Frog rebuild. Whilst Mike is happy to share details with Surrey members I don’t have the skills yet to forward details using the club forum.

Regards Gavin.

I’m going to look into more detail concerning the proposed 1st Zoom  meeting.  I think this should be on a weekday & in the evening – say 8pm on the first Tuesday of the month.

MASC upcoming dates for your diary – January 2021

by Andrew Parrott

Hello Everyone

It’s been a while since I’ve sent out a ‘dates for your diary’ email as there has been nothing much to tell you about. Now, with the outlook a little brighter, I thought I would let you know about some events coming up that we may be allowed out to take part in!

Clearly, these are all subject to change and I will endeavour to keep you updated.

Please note that, for now, our monthly meetings will continue on Zoom. Once the current restrictions have been relaxed sufficiently and the weather allows Bruce has very kindly offered to host another get together at his place. We will return to The Red Lion, Thornby once conditions allow.

  • MG Spares Day – This is normally held at Stonleigh in February but has been shifted back to Sunday 18th April and relocated to the Telford International Centre. MASC will have a stand and this might be an early chance to put some miles on our cars this season in order to seek out that elusive widget.
  • Drive It Day 2021 is on Sunday 25th Last year we had planned to go to Hughenden Manor, a National Trust property near High Wycombe in Buckinghamshire. Plan was to meet up in Towcester for a 10.30am departure and then take a cross-country route to the property. I’m happy to organise this route this year unless anyone else has an alternative suggestion.
  • Midget60, Friday 25th to Sunday 27th June 2021 – The Big Weekend organised by the club to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Midget. Details in MASCOT and on the club web site. Several of us are travelling up on Friday afternoon so there should be opportunities for us to travel together perhaps collecting members from other Areas on the way. If you’re thinking of going but have been put off by the price of the venue hotel then Dave Sewell has found an alternative hotel nearby which is less expensive. Contact Dave on  desewell@hotmail.com or give him a call on 01455 272901.
  • Historic Rally Car Register, Welland Valley Wander Sunday 15th August 2021 – Promises “Interesting places, interesting route, interesting cars.  A tour through Leicestershire, Rutland, Lincolnshire and Northamptonshire finding hidden England.” More details to follow.
  • Saturday/Sunday 11th/12th September 2021 – Classics at Prescott. Entries from last year have been transferred to this new date. More details at https://www.winchcomberotaryclub.com/classics-at-prescott. There will be members from other MASC Areas attending including a large group from Bristol.
  • September 2021? – Lanes Run in conjunction with Central Area. Plan is for two Areas to meet up at Sharnford and follow a scenic route ending at Brixworth Country Park. More details to follow.
  • TBA (July 2021?) TYRE Fest, Ashbourne, Derbyshire. Awaiting details of re-scheduled event.
  • TBA (August 2021?): Abingdon Works Show, British Motor Museum, Gaydon. Sounds like the sort of thing that we would like so we should go! More details to follow.

Other activities:

  • Last year we had planned to relocate our monthly meeting to Stony Stratford in order to meet up with the Home Counties North West Area. Let’s hope we can do that this year.
  • British Motor Museum at Gaydon will be holding ‘Gaydon Gathering’, a free monthly evening gathering aimed at motoring enthusiasts. These will take place on the second Tuesday of every month starting on 13th April 2021. Pre-booking is essential.
  • Caffeine & Machine – We promised ourselves a visit to this popular ‘road house’ venue near Ettington for a while. Would make a nice destination for an evening run one mid-week evening in the summer.
  • Gilks Garage Cafe, Kineton – Similar direction and distance as C&M above. Would make a great venue to meet up with Central, HoE and HCNW Areas.
  • There are also regular classic vehicle meets across our patch including those at Earls Barton and Kineton Village and others organised by Silverstone Social and Long Buckby Vintage and Classic Vehicle Meet. I will let you know more once 2021 events are announced.

Please let me know if you would like any further details on any of the above or if you are aware of other relevant events that others might be interested in attending.

Kind regards

Andrew

New Area Rep

by Gavin Rowles Rowles

Hello all.  I trust you are all well and bearing up in the the current very difficult times. Mike Gorman has stepped down as Area rep for Surrey & I have agreed with the club to take over. I have spoken to Mascot Editor Neil & he hopes to print a few words to confirm this in the next issue.  I have already submitted a small report for the March issue. I am working on a few new idea’s to keep Surrey thriving. Of these, the most important are when & where we meet plus Zoom meetings. As the Covid situation seems unlikely to improve in a meaningful way for sometime I am going to concentrate my efforts on this aspect for the time being. The Club already have a dedicated Zoom maestro so I’m hoping that I can sort this promptly despite my techy failings.

Please feel free to contact me by email or phone 07792028785 if you wish to make any comments or suggestions.

Today’s weather has been fine & I’m itching to get back for a decent run in my Midget. No doubt you are too in you Spridget. I hope to see you in the months to come.

Regards Gavin Rowles.

Up Date from our last Club night Zoom meeting .

by Robert Neil McLeod

Hello All.

After another good Zoom meeting when about 15 members joined in, I thought it would be good to pass on to all that could not join us, some of the chat and ideas that came about from the Zoom meeting.

  • Tatton park has been in touch with me, asking if we would like a club stand for Classic & Performance car Spectacular show on 5th 6th June,  also Passion for Power show 21st 22nd August 2021.I have now registered us for a club stand at both events, of course this will very much depend on how this year pans out, but as it’s an outside venue it may well be able to go ahead, If you would be interested in attending one or both of these weekends please let me know and I can add you name and car to the list.
  • The Practical Classic Restoration Show at the NEC is on the 11th to 13th June is also hoping to go ahead, if you bought a ticket for last year, it will still be valid for this year’s event.
  • We had quite a discussion via Zoom on various car related issues and what members have been doing on their car during this year of lockdown. I thought it would be great if our area members would like to put a finger to key board and type out a short report on what you have been up to over to last few months. Then if you could pass on to me a short story, I would put them together under the heading of North West Area Members Page or pages. I look forward to receiving your copy, thank you in anticipation.
  • I can also let you know your area members are still ploughing on with plans of the MG Midget 60 Big Weekend, with 77 entries to date, we are still very hopeful it will be able to go ahead. Nearer the time we will be asking for our members to come forward to help over the weekend in various rolls. Looking ahead it would be a great help to us if you would like to offer up your name to help in some way, so we could then form a list of members we could call on, that would be a massive help. Thank you.
  • It has been quite a challenge for us all during this pandemic and not being able to meet up at club nights, I know we have all missed this very much, not to mention not being out as a club on run etc. We must now look forward to better times, Shelley and I hope you have all managed to stay well. Our next Zoom meeting will be February 10th at 8pm, do try to join us, always nice to see a now face, as we did this month,  when Keith Oglesby join us  for the first time, thanks Keith.

Hope all the above helps to keep you informed of what is happening in club your area and we are not standing still, but trying to keep your club as active as we can during this very strange times, any questions please do get in touch, all ways good to hear from you.

Neil & Shelley.

MASC BRISTOL

by Terry Horler

Hello fellow Mascavites,

A slightly belated happy new year to you all, despite all the unhappy things surrounding us at the moment. Firstly, I do hope that you are all well and have managed to enjoy Christmas and the new year as best and as safely as you can in these extraordinary times.

Secondly, the news from MASC BRISTOL, OK, there is none. I offer no false hopes of what or when we may be able resume our activities, rest assured, when that does happen, you will soon hear about it. On a good note, I did drive past the Wishing Well just prior of Lockdown 3, its still there and not boarded up.

Masc Bristol HQ has now relocated to the bunker for the duration. Tin hat, thick rubber gloves, two pairs of socks and Jubilee clips around sleeves and trouser legs, I am taking no chances. The walls are thickly insulated with toilet rolls, tins of baked beans and bags of rice. I am quietly confident that I will drive a Sprite again. In the meantime, you can still get in touch with me via the usual channels (see Mascot contacts page).

Stay safe, follow the advice, roll your sleeve up when called, we shall once again leave our mark wherever we may drive, or park up, in our Spridgley things.

Terry
