Welcome to 2021, and we’ve managed to get to the end of January!
This is my first update as the new Area Rep for the Heart of England Region. Dave Colclough decided to step down at the beginning of this year after 2 years in post – a huge thank you to Dave (and Linda) for all their great work during that time, and the support they are continuing to provide.
I’m aiming to distribute a brief monthly newsletter to let you know what’s going on, and in the coming months will also be sending you a short questionnaire to get your views on what you would like the club to be doing in the region. I just need to figure out how to do this using the area rep email process from the MASC website, rather than my personal email!
For those of you that haven’t met me yet – my name is Lara, I have a 1959 Frogeye (named Frodo by my mother) which I’ve had for 5 years. I seem to have spent my life around vehicles. Amongst other roles I’ve worked for ten years in the automotive manufacturing industry and three in aerospace (but I’m not an engineer). I met my partner Alan when we were doing maintenance for a mutual friend’s stage rally car. In 2017 we were two of the service crew for one of the teams in the East African Classic Safari Rally. Away from the mud and spanners, I love Goodwood Revival for the period cars and general atmosphere (including the 1940s, 50s and 60s style), and similar events such as Kop Hill Climb – Frodo has been taken part in that twice now.
I look forward to meeting you, as and when the restrictions are lifted and we can get out and about and enjoy our beloved cars again.
What’s Coming Up?
In terms of plans for the region for 2021, it’s a bit difficult to say at the moment. Dave C had a great line up for last year but sadly due to circumstances outside our control most didn’t happen. Although we did manage Wheels on Wednesday (on a Sunday?!) and Coventry Motorfest’s Shakespeare Run – both in September and subject to some restrictions.
At the moment I’m careful about getting us over excited about too many events until we see how 2021 develops, but I would be remiss not to mention:
MG Spare Day on 18th April. The date has gone back from Feb, and the location has changed to the Telford International Centre.
Drive It Day on 25th April. Last year we showcased photos of our cars for “Drive it on the Drive Day”. Fingers crossed this year we will be able to get our cars out, while ensuring we comply with social distancing restrictions. The rally plates for this year are available to buy from the FBHVC’s Drive It Day website and proceeds will go to support the NSPCC’s Childline counselling service – mine is already in the garage ready to be fitted when the time comes.
The big Midget 60 Weekend on 25th – 27th June. Check out the MASC website or MASCOT for more info.
Subject to any replies and ideas from the questionnaire, I would hope we will be able to arrange events in conjunction with our neighbouring regions, and also reschedule some of the postponed activities from 2020. More local events would include day car runs, Gaydon Gathering, Kineton Classic, Wheels on Wednesday, Gilks’ Garage Café and Caffeine & Machine. Other events could include rescheduling the Shuttleworth Collection and the Lincoln/IBCC weekends. Dave C also has made murmurings of a follow up to the 2019 Midsomer’s Murder Weekend!
In the mean-time we are continuing our monthly meetings via Zoom, each month featuring a quiz prepared by the winner of the previous month. February’s quiz hosts will be Jay and Liz Colley. I would love to see you online if you want to join us.
Do you want a mention in MASCOT? I’m on the look-out for member contributions to feature in the regional report. Have you been making improvements to your car? Do you want to reminisce about a previous event? What else do you want to share with other club members?
We also need some photos showcasing our region and events to feature on our new Regional Page on the MASC website. If you have any photos you would like to share, please get in touch.
Lastly, the best regions aren’t run by one person. I would love to get together a group of people to help with activities. Whether its being a nominated technical expert, or an organiser of runs or events, or any other suggestion – please get in touch!
